Beauden Barrett to guide All Blacks in tour opener against Stormers

The All Blacks will be guided by a 144-Test cap veteran in flyhalf Beauden Barrett when they kick off Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry (RGR) tour in their opening match against the Stormers at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday night (kick-off 7:10pm). Coach Dave Rennie named a mixed team featuring a few veterans, with Barrett backed up by 90-cap outside centre Anton Lienert-Brown, 88-cap left wing Rieko Ioane and 57-cap lock Patrick Tuipulotu, who will also captain the side in the match. A number of exciting up and coming players are also in the mix, including prop Siale Lauaki and utility back Josh Jacomb who will both be making their debuts for the All Blacks. It is the first of four matches that the All Blacks will be playing against the South African franchises, with the Sharks in Durban and Bulls in Pretoria to follow next week Tuesday and Saturday, before the first Test against the Springboks at Ellis Park on the 22nd of August. The visitors will then play the Lions on the 25th, before three more games against the Boks, in Cape Town, back in Johannesburg and then in the US to finish off the just major tour between the two massive rivals in three decades. Dave Rennie All Blacks coach Rennie, who is in his first season with the team, congratulated the debutants while praising the Stormers. “Firstly, I want to congratulate the new All Blacks Siale and Josh. It will be a very exciting and proud day for them and their families,” said Rennie. “We’ve had a great welcome in Cape Town and we’re excited to get this Tour underway. We are really pleased with how our leaders, including match day captain Patrick and tour captain Codie, have prepared the group. We can’t wait for Friday. “We’re well aware of how good this Stormers side is. Yaqeen Ahmed headlines star studded Stormers to take on All Blacks

Junior Springbok star Yaqeen Ahmed will make his senior Stormers debut as part of a star studded match 23 that will front up against the All Blacks when their Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry (RGR) tour kicks off at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday night (kick-off 7:10pm). Ahmed, who helped the Junior Boks to their second straight world championship title in Georgia last month, is the most inexperienced player in a massively experienced Stormers match 23 full of URC stars. Outside centre Ruhan Nel will captain the team and is joined in midfield by Jonathan Roche, with 20-year-old flyhalf Ahmed set to link up with scrumhalf Imad Khan. Fullback Warrick Gelant will have wings Seabelo Senatla and Leolin Zas alongside him, with the experienced Dewaldt Duvenage and the versatile Wandisile Simelane set to provide backline impact off the replacements bench. Up front hooker André-Hugo Venter will have props Vernon Matongo and Neethling Fouché either side of him, with JJ Kotzé, Ntuthuko Mchunu and Sazi Sandi on the replacements bench. Adré Smith and Connor Evans will link up in the second row, with Ruan Ackermann set to be unleashed in the second half. URC winning trio The loose trio of Evan Roos, Hacjivah Dayimani and Deon Fourie is the same combination that started the 2022 URC Grand Final, which saw the Stormers claim the inaugural title in Cape Town. Keke Morabe and Wandile Mlaba have been rewarded for their impressive form in the Carling Currie Cup with places on the bench. Challenging build-up, but Stormers fired up for All Blacks – Rito Hlungwani

Stormers forwards coach Rito Hlungwani admitted that it has been a tough build-up to their Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry (RGR) tour game against the All Blacks at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday, but said that the Stormers were fully up and ready for the challenge. Ordinarily this would be the middle of the Stormers United Rugby Championship squads off season, with their next campaign to kick off at the end of September, but due to their match against the All Blacks, a number of the squad have had to return to training earlier. Thus a number of players have not yet received a sufficient break, but will undoubtedly be extremely excited to face the Haka and test themselves against the Springboks biggest rivals the All Blacks. Challenging “It has been a bit challenging and we’ve had to work around those challenges. Usually at this stage (of the off-season) we are still in break mode or just at the start of the pre-season. We had to come back a bit earlier this year,” explained Hlungwani at a Stormers press conference on Monday. “We have got a group of players who have been playing in the Currie Cup, and there are a few guys who had an extra week or two added onto the previous season through playing for the SA A team, and of course, we also have a few Junior Boks. “So we managed to get everyone back a bit earlier because we knew we had this big game to prepare for and everyone is hungry to be part of it. “It is massively challenging because of the time of year we are in, but we have been working together for three weeks now, and we do feel we have prepared really well for what will be a massive occasion for us as a club. For many of the players and coaches this will be a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Possible selections Although he didn’t want to give anything away, Hlungwani admitted that exciting Junior Springbok star flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed was training with the URC squad and would be in the running to feature in Friday nights match. “We will announce the team later in the week, but he (Ahmed) has been training with us, as has Oli Reid (Junior Bok prop). We have had a number of the Junior Boks who are not currently in the Currie Cup squad training with us,” said Hlungwani. A position that they may struggle to fill is lock, after both Salmaan Moerat and Ruben van Heerden left the franchise after the past season, while some players are injured, or returning to fitness from injury, including former Junior Bok captain Riley Norton. “JD (Schickerling) is moving around well at training, but we’re not sure if we want to push him for this game. Riley is also back running after his injury with the Springboks, but again we’re not sure if we want to risk him this weekend,” explained Hlungwani. “Adre Smith is available, Connor Evans is available, and Ruan Ackermann has played lock before, so we do have options.”

Rassie: Siya the ‘one guy’ they don’t have to worry about returning from injury

Out of the five Springboks returning from injury against Argentina on Saturday night, Siya Kolisi is the one player coach Rassie Erasmus has the fewest concerns about. Kolisi, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Morné van den Berg have all been out for between one and three months, whereas locks Eben Etzebeth (concussion) and Lood de Jager (hip surgery) have each only played one match for their franchises in 2026. All five were named to play in the Springboks’ one-off Test in Buenos Aires. Four start, and scrumhalf Van den Berg set to replace Cobus Reinach from the bench. Injuries nothing new to Kolisi Kolisi suffered a hamstring strain that saw him withdrawn just minutes before the kick-off of the opening Nations Championship Test against England at Ellis Park last month. Though 35 years old, Erasmus pointed to Kolisi’s famous recoveries from a knee injury before the 2019 World Cup and a lengthy ACL and knee injury before the 2023 World Cup, playing the majority of the games in both. Erasmus backed him to fit in seamlessly, having gone through it all before. “Because of his age and experience with injuries… you learn how to deal with those injuries and you get better every single time [you return],” the Springbok coach said. “You know how to rehab, how to handle the pressure and frustrations you go through. “Siya’s experienced with that. He does his rehab on time. With our experiences, we’ve never been unsure about Siya. He’s always delivered.” But Erasmus had his contingency, with impact player Marco van Staden on the bench. “As long as he’s [Kolisi’s] productive and delivers on the field, we want to get maximum minutes. But that will probably be a half, or a little bit more than a half.” Lock replacements Regarding the dip in depth at lock – with Franco Mostert, RG Snyman, Jean Kleyn, Ruan Venter and Salmaan Moerat injured, and Pieter-Steph du Toit, Ruben van Heerden and Ruan Nortjé being rested for the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Series – Erasmus opted for regular flanker Ben-Jason Dixon and Cobus Wiese to cover for Etzebeth and De Jager, respectively. These will be straight substitutions, with Wiese calling lineouts after De Jager.
