He will not feature in the Blaugrana’s friendly against Birmingham City on July 31.A move that has dragged for weeksThe Athletic first reported on July 3 that Ajax and Barcelona had reached a verbal agreement in principle over the loan, which would cover the entire 2026-27 season. What should have been a routine exit then stalled for the best part of a month over tax complications arising from the legal frameworks in Spain and the Netherlands – specifically, how the additional fiscal charges generated by paying a salary across two jurisdictions would be distributed between the parties.Marc-Andre ter Stegen directs his teammates during a match for FC Barcelona.Barcelona sources described the situation as considerably more complicated than initially anticipated, while those close to Ter Stegen’s camp said the delays stemmed from a determination to structure the deal correctly rather than rush it through. Those issues were resolved on Thursday, clearing the path for him to fly to Amsterdam. As Ter Stegen himself acknowledged briefly at Birmingham Airport before boarding, the process was not quite finished: he still needs to complete his medical, finalise documentation and sign all relevant agreements before Ajax can formally announce the transfer.Financial structure and salary burdenThe financial structure of the loan has been the defining complication throughout. Barcelona will continue to pay around 90 per cent of Ter Stegen’s wages – a figure that could dip slightly depending on his involvement and achievements at Ajax, but only marginally. That is a consequence of the contract extension he signed in 2023, which was back-loaded with deferred salary payments and runs until 2028, leaving the Catalans carrying the bulk of his remuneration regardless of where he plays.The FFP obstacles that had been blocking the deal were real enough, but Barcelona’s motivation was always as much about squad clarity as cap relief. Joan García has been the first-choice goalkeeper since joining from Espanyol last summer, and Wojciech Szczęsny – who had announced his retirement from football in July 2024 before returning to cover for Ter Stegen’s injury – signed a two-year extension in July 2025. West Ham United midfielder Edson Álvarez has been mentioned as a possible candidate, while a reunion with former Köln player Ellyes Skhiri was also explored.Skhiri is no longer considered an option at the RheinEnergieStadion, however. The 31-year-old has been permitted to seek an Eintracht Frankfurt departure, but Köln have decided to pursue alternative solutions.Managing director for sport Thomas Kessler recently confirmed that the cathedral city club are seeking a No. 6 capable of providing the team with greater stability. Financial limitations nevertheless mean Köln must identify a player available under favourable conditions.A loan with a purchase option for Souza would have met those requirements. Wolfsburg have no interest in accepting such a proposal.Wolfsburg’s plan with Vinicius SouzaWolfsburg invested approximately €15 million to sign Souza from Sheffield United last summer.The former Flamengo academy player arrived as Wolfsburg’s marquee summer signing after previously representing Lommel, KV Mechelen, Espanyol and Sheffield United. Souza also brought with him the experience of 36 Premier League appearances.His first season in Germany nevertheless proved deeply disappointing.Souza was regularly deployed in an advanced midfield role under former Wolfsburg trainer Paul Simonis. The experiment prevented the physical Brazilian from working in his preferred position directly in front of the back line.Simonis faced repeated criticism for using Souza as an attacking link player instead of allowing him to concentrate on winning challenges, screening the defence and initiating attacks from deeper areas.The arrangement appeared designed to avoid displacing club captain Maximilian Arnold. It ultimately served neither Souza nor the team particularly well.The midfielder later disappeared from the starting XI entirely as Wolfsburg’s season deteriorated. Souza won challenges in deeper areas, completed forward passes and used his physical strength to help stabilize the team’s central axis.The improvement came too late to prevent Wolfsburg’s relegation, but it demonstrated why the club originally spent heavily to acquire him.Hecking, who subsequently moved from the touchline into Wolfsburg’s sporting administration, evidently believes Souza can remain useful. New head coach Tobias Strobl also considers the Brazilian a likely starter in the second division.Wolfsburg are therefore expected to consider a sale only if an interested club offers something close to their original €15 million investment.Such a fee lies well beyond Köln’s present financial capabilities.
